“FITCH!”

Cooper tugged off his dive hood, shook the water out of his ears, and

looked up the beach to where the platoon leader—his new Officer In

Charge—stood with his hands on his hips, looking testy. Nuts. Cooper had

just swum a couple thousand yards against the tide in full battle rattle,

shoving through water cold enough to make his sinus cavities feel like

they’d been clobbered by a two-by-four. What he wanted was a hot

shower and a few platefuls of Navy spaghetti. Instead, he started breaking

down his dive rig—take care of the equipment and the equipment would

take care of him—and waited for his new boss to fill up his dance card.

His swim buddy, Mitch Chalmers, a chunk of meat everybody called

Horse on account of some story they seemed to be saving to tell Cooper

when they knew him better, asked, “What crawled up his butt this time?”

Cooper had responsibilities coming out his ass, so he hadn’t put

much time yet toward bonding with Horse. So far, Cooper knew that his

specialty areas included demolitions and rigging, both of which required

an impressive combination of brute strength and precision. More pertinent

to their current situation, his couple hundred pounds of muscle sank like a

stone in water, but sheer bullheadedness helped him keep up. Cooper

admired that. He also appreciated the way Horse generally cut through the

bullshit, but swim buddy or no, Horse was enlisted and Cooper his

superior officer, so he chided him under his breath: “Show the man a little

respect.”

“That run kicked ass,” Horse said. “You know it did.” He pointed a

little way down the beach, where the other pair in their fire team, Ambrose

Bethea and Jamie Lydecker, had already gathered their shit and were

making their way toward lunch. “But he always finds something to bitch

about.”
